The ever so popular application Yik-Yak has taken social media by storm. Basically what the app entails is that it is an anonymous twitter. Here is the basics; you yak whatever you are thinking and it posts on the Yik-yak feed and your name is not associated with it. It is just up there for people to up vote or down vote on or even comment on, but here is the catch, it is only visible around a 10 mile radius from where you post. For example, if you post near a college campus then all the college students in that area and anyone else who downloads it and is in that area can see it at as well. It is an app that you can say whatever you want with no repercussions whatsoever. Same goes with your replies as well, you can reply to any of the yaks with no repercussions whatsoever because no one will know you are the that posted it, unless you post something threatening to someone else and that can be tracked down by authorities, but besides that you have free reign.
Now this can cause a lot of controversies with it be anonymous, it seems that there is a lot of cyber-bullying that is taking place. Just a few minutes ago I was on the app and someone posted about how excited they were to go get some food from a restaurant somewhere, which normally on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram you wouldn't comment anything rude or vulgar but since you can be anonymous someone people decided the wanted to say how they actually felt; shown in the picture to the right.
Now because of this, some people believe, especially college campuses that this is causing too much cyber-bullying and that the app should be banned from those campuses to prevent any more of it. Now I am not insensitive, but I think that it utterly ridiculous for so many reasons; 1st reason being is that you cannot ban an app like that from a college campus because it is a fundamental right for people to have that app on their phone. The 2nd reason being is that this will not prevent cyber-bullying at all. Cyber-bullying takes place on all social media i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. Are we going to ban all those apps from college campuses too? I doubt it. Finally the 3rd reason being is that people need to stop being so sensitive and try not to take anything too seriously. I am not saying that people are asking to get bullied and they should be able to post whatever they want without getting bullied but remember you are posting anonymous too so no one knows it is you so you can’t get too offended by what people say back to you.
I believe that this app is just a fad and will eventually die out. This is one of hundreds of apps that are popular for a few months then eventually dies out. Some may take longer than others but this app does not have any future to it because you can’t establish a group of followers like on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and eventually you can’t see your posts or anyone else’s after a while because they are only on the feed for so long. So unless it makes advances in that sense it will die out but it never will because that takes away from the whole point of having the app. Let’s just sit back and relax people, this app is not promoting cyber-bullying any more than the other popular social media apps and banning it from college campuses will not stop it either.
